Visiting the Seals on Horsey Beach.
/One of our favourite things to do while on a sailing holiday on the broads is to moor up at Horsey Dyke and walk the 20-30 minutes to Horsey Beach to see the wild seals. The mile-and-a-half footpath from Horsey dyke is a grassy track which takes you across classic Norfolk marshland famous for its stunning wildlife and scenery. It is a quick detour to the Nelson Head Pub or you can carry on to the sand dunes and to the sandy beach.
The seal population fluctuates throughout the year, depending on the day and season. The pictures and videos were captured in January, during the pupping season. However, during the summer months, there is also a splendid display of seals. A satisfied customer from the previous year shared their experience of returning with their family for a second day. They sat at a distance on the beach, and to their astonishment and delight, the seals approached them.

Visiting the seals at Horsey Gap is a wonderful experience for nature enthusiasts, known for its colony of grey seals. These grey seals come ashore most of the year and partially during the winter months for the pupping season, making it a prime spot for children, wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. The number and frequency of seals have been growing over recent years. If you're planning a visit, here are some tips to make the most of your trip:
1. Respect Wildlife and Regulations:
Remember that you are in a natural habitat for these animals. Keep a respectful distance from the seals, typically at least 10 meters away. Do not approach them or disturb them, especially the pups. There might be designated viewing areas; make sure to stick to these spots.
2. Use Binoculars and Cameras:
While maintaining a safe distance, binoculars and cameras with zoom lenses will allow you to get a closer look at the seals and capture some amazing photographs without getting too close.
3. Dress Appropriately:
It can be colder and windier on the beach, especially during the winter months. Dress warmly, wear layers, and don't forget waterproof clothing. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are also recommended as the terrain might be uneven.
5. Be Mindful of the Environment:
Carry your rubbish back with you and avoid disturbing the natural surroundings. Horsey Gap is not just about the seals; it's also a beautiful coastal area with unique flora and fauna.
6. Be Patient:
Wildlife sightings are not always guaranteed. Seals might not always be visible, especially during certain times.
